Acrobat Reader DC Configuration (PKCS11 module)(Windows)

You can set up the PKCS11 module in Acrobat Reader DC by following these steps:


  • Connect your eID card reader to your computer.
  • Insert your eID in the card reader (the microchip upwards).

Important the Eid card must be inserted before opening Acrobat Reader DC, otherwise the procedure will not work.

  • Open Acrobat Reader DC.
  • In the menu bar at the top go to 'Edit' and open 'Preferences...'.
  • Click on the “Security (Enhanced)” category
  • Clear the box “Enable Protected Mode at startup”
  • Click on “Yes”
  • Close completely Acrobat Reader
  • Re-open Acrobat Reader DC.
  • In the menu bar at the top go to 'Edit' and open 'Preferences...'.
  • Select 'Signatures' at the left.
  • Click 'More' in the 'Identities & Trusted Certificates' section.
  • Click 'Digital IDs > PKCS#11 Modules and tokens' and then 'Link module'.
  • Do you have a Windows 32-bit operating system? Then select the file 'C:/Windows/System32/beidpkcs11.dll' and click 'Open'.
  • Do you have a Windows 64-bit operating system?
    • If your version of Adobe Acrobat is a 32-bit version, select the file 'C:/Windows/SysWOW64/beidpkcs11.dll' and click 'Open'.
    • If your version of Adobe Acrobat is a 64-bit version, select the file 'C:/Windows/System32/beidpkcs11.dll' and click 'Open'.


  • In the 'Digital IDs > PKCS#11 Modules and tokens' you will now see a line with the text 'Belgium eID PKCS#11 interface v2'.
  • Insert your eID in the card reader.
  • Click 'Belgium eID PKCS#11 interface v2' and then the 'Refresh' button. Wait until your eID card has been read.
  • Expand 'Belgium eID PKCS#11 interface v2' and select 'BELPIC' below.
  • Click your signature certificate and, under User options, select 'Use for signing'.
  • A pencil appears on the left of your signature certificate

You can now use your signature certificate for signing in Acrobat Reader DC. The certificate will be offered by Acrobat Reader DC when placing a digital signature.
